It’s not necessary but it is safer to meet the culprits at the front door before they enter on their own. It’s like having a bouncer at the front door.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

If you are running a windows PC and you are in frequent use of the internet, yes you must have your PC protected at all times so real-time is a good thing, but a good firewall is also something that you should consider. Otherwise your PC can catch viruses and lots of spyware. There are some free anti-virus software such as AVG that can do a good job of protecting your PC. However the one thing I would recommend would be to use a different operating system other than windows such as Ubuntu or OS X (mac). These OS can provide safer and better experience than windows if you don’t need to run windows software.

Antivirus Yes.
Anti spyware/adware/malware No.
Just scan 3-4 times a week.
Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything. This because the program you download can get infected.
Disable “System Restore” for Windows Me and XP, then restart your PC to clean your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.http://www.microsoft.com/technet/communi…
Now restart in safe mode.
To get in safe mode Press “F8″ upon boot up.
Select “Safe mode with Network”.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Enter(ok).
Do a full scan of all your drivers. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.ewido.net/en/ Enter(ok).
Do a full scan of all your drivers. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
**NOTE**: Do NOT do anything else with your computer when scanning. This because you can start virus/adware/spyware/malware manually.
When no one of these scanners are showing anything you can reboot back to normal mode.
Turn on “System Restore”.

For PC users, I have made the switch on my Dell from Win XP to Ubuntu Linux and I agree with others in this thread, it’s a much less worrisome experience.
There is a bit of a learning curve, but that is to be expected. If you would like virus free computing and net browsing, Linux is a superior solution.

Not that the ones you have are bad, but there is a much better and cheaper way to go about this. I use these programs myself and they work great. I’ve even tested the protection, by running online scans and I come up clean.
For spyware protection these programs work great and they are free.
Spybot
Windows Defender
Yahoo Anti Spyware
Ad-ware ae
(I would suggest having at least two, highly recommend spybot and ad-ware ae)
For anti-virus

Contrary to some of the previous posts… Free anti-virus software does not protect you from spyware/malware/etc….
Most internet providers will give you a free package with your broadband service (assuming you have broadband).
With yahoo, i got free software
With comcast, I got free software
With charter (who i have now), I have F-Secure (firewall, AV, and spyware protection)
Goto your accounts page, or call them up, i can almost guarantee you they will give you something for free, instead of trying to mix and match up free software… its much easier, you’ll be safter, and best, it’s free…
If you just got a free scanner like spybot S&D (or similar), and you got infected… Here is what would happen:
1. You get infected
2. It is a week or so until you run the program to find out you are infected, during that week, you are exploited and vonurable to other viruses and spyware…
3. Your scanner realizes you’re infected, after you scan.
4. Most of the time, the scanner will let you know you’re infected, but not be able to get rid of all the files that are working in conjuction with the spyware/virus. (and if it is able to get rid of them… when you’re done, your browser will most likely not work properly)
5. You will end up having to use a different computer to do research on the spyware you were infected with.
6. You will go back, and work to try to get back control of your computer, which in most cases, isn’t worth the time, so you’ll end up having to reload…
SO, i’d say, just getting the software from your provider is worth it…
