I’ve always liked Spybot Search & Destroy. It’s quite popular, and been consistently improving over the years. It also has frequent updates and a friendly interface.

Windows Defender works quite well in my experience. It’s free for Windows XP users and monitors for potential spyware issues before you get infected next time (a good prevention solution is always easier and better than a good removal solution).
Also, if Defender cannot remove it automatically, and you know what spyware has infected you, you can go to “www.bleepingcomputer.com” and do a search for what has infected your PC and find manual removal instructions for almost anything out there.

You can try AVG free edition or you may need to buy it but the free should work

Have you tried lavasoft adaware? Spybot? AVG antispyware?
Even if it’s annoying the best you can do is to backup all you important data and then format your hard drive. Finally reinstall your operating system.
Sometimes is the only way to make sure spyware is gone.

I have been using spy sweeper for a while now and I am pretty happy with it. I also think that paying for an antispyware software can be a great long term investment. I don’t use free programs when it comes to security.

Firstly update and run your anti-virus product. You can also run a free online scan as well as some malware can actually corrupt or disable your resident security products. Here are a few online scans you can run:

Second download, update and run scans using the following products:

Third, after cleaning your system, disable System Restore, reboot and re-enable System Restore when you log back on. This will clear the malware that may still be lurking in System Restore, which could be reinstalled should you need to rollback at some point. Additionally, a reboot may be required to complete the malware removal process.
Lastly, you may also want to install the following tool. It is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources.
